Marcel Vertès was a painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Born in Budapest, he was a student of K. Ferenczy, then moved to Vienna where he quickly established a fine reputation as a poster artist. In 1925 he moved to Paris when he was commissioned by Maurice Exteens, Gustave Pellet’s son-in-law and successor, to illustrate two albums of lithographs, one in black called ‘Maisons’, the other in colour called ‘Dancings’, the latter somehow reminiscent of Toulouse-Lautrec’s album ‘Elles’, published by Pellet.

Vertès had a difficult time establishing himself in France, though his mordant wit, sharp observation and choice of subject, the twilit world of brothers, nightclubs, swingers and discreetly unfaithful couples did not make things easier for him. He moved to the United States in the late 1930s, greatly sweetening his choice of subjects and their treatment, portraying circuses, romantic lovers and horseback rides.

Marcel Vertès painted a number of murals for stores, restaurants and private houses, including one for Gypsy Rose Lee. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon de l’Araignée and a large number of galleries.
